In other sports the ability to move quickly is a key component for competition

Sprint training is a key component for injury prevention including hamstring, calf, Achilles and groin injuries and the better conditioned you are the less likely you are to become injured but also you develop better physical outputs and also aesthetics

  • Improvements in strength and power
  • Increase movement capacity
  • Improvements in health outputs
  • Increased capacity and fitness

Performance Coaching

This can look like S&C or other coaching, however my view is that rather than specific this is more holistic often acting as a lynchpin connecting specialists from sports agents, Psychology, Nutrition, Sports Science, Medical etc as well looking at logistics, planning all through an ongoing process of reflection

Sometimes this can be very difficult as it requires asking some very hard questions regarding steps that lead to outcomes and how we can overcome barriers and challenges that affected our intended outcomes and goals

This process then leads towards decision making and affirmative action planning with a refined approach to our goals – this is Mike’s key skill and something he can help you with if you aren’t sure what you may need

Youth Athletic Development

Similar to S&C although appreciating that youth athletes are not the same as adults and we must safe guard against training them like small adults as this can affect or relate to

  • Peak Height Velocity
  • Growth Plate Injury / Bone Health
  • Mental Health
  • Eating Disorders

Mike works with parents, coaches, governing bodies (where appropriate) to ensure the best management plan for a youth athlete is agreed upon

Speed

Speed training transfers to more than just the track

A 2014 paper from the Bundesliga showed that more than 40% of goals scored were preceded by a sprint and recent research has shown the number of sprints, the sprint speed and sprint duration/distance have all increased in the past 10 years in professional football

Strength & Conditioning

Although speed is part of S&C I have put it here because it also looks into further assessments around physical capacity, outputs that help guide training insights

The key element around S&C is gym and field based development of physical key performance indicators (KPI’s) for performance, work and life and is supported through the coach-athlete relationship (even if you aren’t going to the Olympics I still call you an athlete!)

The following benefits for getting guidance in S&C and how it can help you are below

Injury Assessment and Rehabilitation

“The greatest limitation to any athlete’s career is injury”

Dan Pfaff

Injury can be a difficult and often scary place to be and with the NHS having a backlog of over 300,000 in the UK awaiting help and care it’s essential to be proactive and develop a plan and even in the face of major trauma understanding that it is an opportunity to learn about yourself, what you’re made of and remind yourself how amazing the human body is and what you’re made of

Too many people languish in relying on pain avoidance, medications to numb the pain and sometimes adverse behaviors such as Alcohol to help sleep with medics often saying things like “you will never run again!”

Combined with Mike’s ‘Performance Coach’ approach outlined above he can assess your ailment from a fresh perspective, decatastrophise some of the thinking used in modern western medicine and develop a daily/weekly plan of action to help you address all elements confounding your injury problem from a simple ankle sprain, to an ACL rupture right through to a 20 year back problem – Together we’ve got this!

Consulting, Research and CPD

This is the newest area of Mike’s work, although having done this on and off for the past 10 years across coaches, athletes, teams etc it’s typically been very Ad-hoc and this is the first time Mike is offering this as a service to external clients

Coupled with his PhD theme around clinical and performance assessments pertaining to sporting movements like running and jumping it offers open opportunities for new discussions and idea development
